A mutual company, since a barn fire in 1928
Midwest Secure is owned by the people it insures. There are no shareholders, so our only job is to pay claims fairly and keep coverage affordable for members.
Our history
- 1928Forty-one farmers, one fund
After a lightning fire took the Hauser barn outside Delaware, Ohio, neighbors pooled money to cover each other’s barns. They called it the Midwest Farmers’ Mutual Aid Association.
- 1949Into Indiana and onto the road
We wrote our first auto policies as farm families bought their first trucks, and opened our first office outside Ohio.
- 1974Homes in town
Members’ children moved to cities, so we followed with homeowners and renters coverage across six states.
- 1993The Great Flood
When the Mississippi and Missouri flooded, we paid every member claim within 60 days and started helping members buy flood coverage.
- 2012New name, same deal
We became Midwest Secure and grew to 14 states, adding boats, pets, travel and small business coverage.
- 2023A summer of derechos and hail
Three storms brought 38,000 claims in six weeks. We sent 400 adjusters to Iowa and Illinois and skipped that year’s dividend to keep rates steady.
- 2026Still member-owned
We returned $41.6 million to members last year and still answer claims calls with our own staff, every hour of every day.
How a mutual works
Every policyholder is a member with a vote. Members elect our board each spring. When premiums collected are more than claims and costs, the board can return the surplus as a dividend, credited at each member’s next renewal.
| Year | Total returned |

Dividends are not guaranteed and are declared each year by the board of directors.
Board of directors
Every director is a member, elected by members to a three-year term.
